Restoration Project: Santon Bridge Village Hall, Cumbria
π Santon Bridge, West Cumbria

Millers Roofing Services Limited were extremely proud to complete extensive restoration and improvement works at Santon Bridge Village Hall, an important community building that has served local residents for generations.
This historic site includes sections dating back to 1864, alongside the main hall built in the 1920s. Working on buildings of this age requires specialist knowledge, careful planning, and respect for the original structure.
Our team carried out a wide range of structural repairs, damp protection measures, and internal upgrades to help preserve the hall while ensuring it remains safe, functional, and protected for many years to come.

Structural & External Restoration – 1920s Hall
The 1920s section of the hall required significant structural repairs and external restoration work.
Our team completed the following improvements:
- Repair of rotten and damaged roofline timbers
- Full strip and restoration of the south-facing gable end
- Installation of wall ties where required to strengthen the structure
- Installation of additional air bricks to improve subfloor ventilation
- Complete external re-rendering of the affected walls
These works were essential to stabilise the building and protect it from future weather damage.

Damp Protection & Internal Upgrades – 1920s Hall
Damp was a key issue within the building, particularly on the south-facing gable.
To resolve this, we carried out a comprehensive damp treatment and internal refurbishment programme:
- Full damp treatment to the south-facing gable including tanking and chemical DPC installation
- Full internal damp treatment within the 1920s hall
- Installation of new load-bearing joists and floorboards, fully treated for wood rot protection
- Installation of new insulated plasterboards
- Full re-plastering from floor to ceiling
These upgrades significantly improve both the structural integrity and internal environment of the building.

Restoration Works – 1864 Section
The older 1864 part of the hall required careful restoration to preserve its historic character while upgrading the facilities.
Kitchen Area Renovation
The kitchen space was completely refurbished and modernised while maintaining the building’s heritage feel.
Work included:
- Full damp treatment throughout the kitchen
- Installation of new plasterboards
- Full re-plastering from floor to ceiling
- Removal of the existing kitchen
- Installation of a brand new Howdens kitchen with integrated appliances
- Installation of new lighting and electrical sockets
- Floor preparation and installation of oak Karndean flooring
- New skirting boards fitted throughout

Former Larder Restoration
The former larder was also fully restored:
- Full damp treatment to the area
- Installation of new plasterboards
- Full re-plastering from floor to ceiling
- Crafting and installing a custom wooden door designed to match the original 1864 style
Maintaining the historical character of this section of the building was an important part of the project.

Safety Improvements & Additional Works
Alongside the main restoration works, several important safety and improvement measures were carried out:
- Re-hanging fire doors and upgrading fire safety locks
- Draft-proofing works to improve energy efficiency
- Creation of a new internal doorway
- Demolition of a small outbuilding and re-rendering of the exposed area
- Replacement of external guttering with new black half-round gutters and downpipes
These upgrades help ensure the building meets modern safety standards while maintaining its historic charm.
